Good Choice of Resources

Post by moneymenace on Fri Nov 05, 2010 9:18 pm

Hey, guys, here's my first tutorial on-site and I want to teach you on how to get or even make you very own resources to put in your game.

What do I need?
Graphics
Spoiler:
There are several graphics that you will need for your game. Title Screen, Gameover, Tileset, Animation, whatever. What of those do you need?

Here's my example of a game.
The title of the game is "A Full Recovery". This game is about a character who was just fired from his doctor job for being late again. He then sets off on a journey to Nilyu who has accepted his job application and he will work there as a doctor. He meets three people on his jouney. Two mages in dark robes, one with green hair and one with black hair, and a child with white torn clothes and brown hair. This is set in early times, such as a medieval time.

With this alone, you already know of some resources you will need. A character in some kind of doctor's uniform, two mages with those parameters, and a small child with white torn clothes and brown hair.
But you will need other things. Icons for the mages' staves. A title screen kind of showing the journey of a doctor. Battlers (Monsters) that will be encountered on this long journey. Medieval-type tilesets.
Generally, most of these things don't have to be created until before you first releasal, but the tilesets will have to be placed in almost immediately of starting the game so you don't have to change every tileset to fit how you want it. I recommend you get a large variety of tilesets from different creators and then use bulletxt's tile swap whenever needed.

Music
Spoiler:
Who knows what music you'll need. Music is a lot easier to aqcuire than graphics, but is a lot harder to get it the exact way you want it. The only way to fix that is to be a composer yourself. But if that doesn't become the case then use these tips.

Here's my example of a game:
The title of the game is "Plague War". It's about where two small towns are inflicted with a plague that was soon known as the "Sorceries' Plague" for it's unknown magical properties. No one knows why this plague came about until the government. A large castle town northeast was trading with them when the plague had then soon started. War was instated. Everyone was dieing from not only the plague but from the great war. Olivia visits her doctor one last time to realize that she was still ridden of the plague. She escapes the great war with her friend, Penny. She escapes to her aunt's home across the sea. They go to places like myserious dungeons, deep sewers, and towns that have been ridden to be protected from the plague. Penny was then realized to be plagued and then dies. Olivia takes the boat by herself to her aunt's house.

This story is valiant, grave, creepy, and sad. When you look at a game or a story, you may feel internal emotions come from it. Those emotions will be played as the music.
You will need a great war valiant theme for the title screen. You will need town music for the two towns before the plague occurs. You need devastating sad music when the plague occurs. You will need the devastating, war-like music when the war occurs. You will need creepy, scary music for the deserted towns, dungeons, and deep sewers. You will need very sad music when Penny dies. You will need depressing music for the ride on the boat back home.

Scripts
To be made...

How to get your resources?
It's very easy to find resources. But to find the one specifically for your game will be more difficult.

Spoiler:
Check the Place you Know
What RPG Maker resource sites are you familiar with?
OmegaDev? rpgmakervx.net? Here? rpgrevolution.com?

Well check on those websites first, the resources you're looking for could be in front of you. Look in the resource section, use the search function, check multiple shops, use the gallery.

Google It
If you haven't found it in the places that are used to visiting, then how about looking at the places that you are not used to visiting.
Googling can be a serious pain in the butt unless you know exactly what keywords to put into the engine. And even then, if may take a while for you to find something that you want. For some reasons, if you google something you don't want, you get what you want. You should try it.

Shop for It
Have you given up altogether looking for that dang resource, or are just plain lazy. Well then, I know of several shops on RPG Maker sites that have several different duties to address. There are already quite a few on this site. And the great thing about shopping is, you will get almost exactly what you want, because the resource will be under YOUR parameters. Shop owners like it when you have good details going behind your resource so that they know exactly what they are making and why they are making it. And gues what, IT'S FREE!

Make it yourself
Obviously, not everyone is good at everything. I mean, I can't make graphics for crap, but make some pretty good music. I'm sure most of you reading this don't have an artistic touch at all. I mean, you can be taught, which would help in your benefit.
BUT! If you can make it yourself, then do it! Because guess what. It's free. It's EXACTLY up to your parameters because YOU made it. You get to share it with the world, so that the people who may need your resource will be in deep gratitue.

Extra Support
I just want to let you guys know that I have never had any training for the music that I made. The only corresponding training is how to play piano. Other than that, I take sounds that I hear and mesh it together for your guys' entertainment. You guys do have the ability to make your own stuff. With time.

I hope you liked the tutorial. Scripts section coming up soon. If you have any questions or ideas to add to this article, please assess it with me, and I will gladly respond.
Feedback is more than welcome. Within proper critiscm marks.

Hey, Money, I have a question regarding Music Format. Do you know any programs that can smoothly record and edit your instrument sounds so it doesn't sound like a piece of crap on a stick?

@Shady:
I don't record anything so I can't help you with any decent recording studio.
But (and these are all free decent methods) you can use FL Studio to convert any MIDI to MP3/WAV. That's how I get my MIDIs on youtube.
Second, I suggest Audacity, it has a boost in high ends and low ends and a bunch of other cool effects. I used that for a reverse effect in my "Temple of Time" song. (The reversed effect is not in the song I gave to you guys.)

@mitchi.exe
I'll be sure to. Thanks for the support.
